Is this ice warm enough?

The NHL played the 2022 Discover NHL Winter Classic this weekend, outdoors in St. Paul, Minnesota. The weather forecast was -3 high and -15 low. The Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues played on an artificial rink in the middle of the open-air Target Field. “As with any outdoor game, weather is a factor,” Mayer said. “We clearly recognize that when we go to any venue as with any game, we’re monitoring the weather, and we’ll make decisions that are in the interest of our players and our fans, period.” They sold out and had about 38,000 fans. The NHL warmed the ice for the Winter Classic. The ideal surface temperature for the ice is 22 degrees, or else it gets too brittle and skates do not slide as well. “The floor of the Winter Classic ice rink is made of 283 aluminum ice pans. A mobile refrigeration unit pumps glycol through pipes to the pans and back to the truck to transfer heat… When the air temperature is above the optimum ice temperature, the glycol and aluminum pans transfer heat away from the ice. But when the air temperature is below the optimum ice temperature, it transfers heat to the ice.” The NHL is using two custom made heaters for the Winter Classic in Minnesota. Crews are able to keep the temperature within a half-degree of their settings. Fans are being considered, too. The NHL ordered 40,000 hand-warmers. Blankets will be allowed. Weather isn’t the only problem irking the NHL. The league has had to postpone 18 games in the last two weeks. Most of those were related to covid fear restrictions in Canada.

Giving a man his physical, a doctor noticed several dark, ugly bruises on his shins,
so he asked, “Do you play hockey?”
“Do you play soccer?”
“Do you play any other physical sport?
Not at all. I just play bridge with my wife.”

The tooth fairy.

The first jockstrap in ice hockey was introduced in 1874. The helmet was first obligatory
in 1974.
So it took precisely 100 years before men realized that the brain eventually could be
useful too.
